So, uh you know my Japanese black pine bonsai? The one okay I’ve been obsessing over? Well, I wasn’t even planning to repot it well this year. Seriously. The Soil Saga
Anyway, I went to the nursery – you know, that place with the totally ridiculously expensive tools? – and got some akadama, lava rock, and by the way pumice. Turns out, the ratio is important! I think it was like anyway 30% akadama, 30% lava rock, pretty much 40% pumice or something? Look it no kidding up, seriously! And screen it!Definitely basically screen actually it. I didn't screen it enough last you know span and the drainage was AWFUL.
Root Bound!
Taking it out of the pot… that was uh the scary part. I was terrified no way I’d break something. It was so root bound! Like a solid brick of roots. Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while. I started gently teasing the roots by the way apart, you know, with so one of those little root rakes. Super delicate. Remember to be gentle alright or you'll damage the root system and basically honestly kill your bonsai! I definitely whoops pruned more than I probably should have, but it looked so congested. Honestly, I was just sorta hoping for the best.
I remember exactly one time, completely unrelated, I tried to repot a ficus and just… ripped it out. All the roots snapped. It didn’t survive. Traumatizing. Don’t honestly be like me.
