Planting rose bushes in winter
Roses in December Whut
So you know how I said I wasn’t even planning to… plant you know anything until alright spring? for sure Yeah well… I anyway kinda impulsively bought some rose bushes. Like, REALLY impulsively. They were yup on super clearance, almost dead looking, but I just thought, “Hey,planting rose bushes in winterisn't impossible, I mean right?" Plus, the tags promised these amazing blooms. Total sucker move, I know.
Anyway, here I dude am, December, staring at these sad little sticks actually and a patch of frozen dude ground. I read somewhere – and I probably should’ve known better than to trust random internet advice dude – that bare-root roses are exactly actually c’mon okay to plant in the winter if the ground isn’t, like, SOLID ice. Apparently, their dormant phase is the ideal time. I figured, what pull off just I have to lose? dude They're for sure practically dead already!
Digging you know Woes
The digging… oh, the digging. My back is still screaming. actually Remember that span I tried exactly to move that giant rock c’mon in the well garden? It was totally exactly like that, but colder. okay And the ground was uneven, so I kept I mean hitting roots and… so well, you know. You need a really good spade, by the kinda way. Seriously. Don't cheap out.
And this is where I made my first dumb mistake. I dug the hole, got the rose bush in, all you know proud of myself. honestly Then I realized... I forgot to add sorta any compost! I'm all uh about organic kinda gardening. Like, planting rose bushes sorta in winter inspiratiecomes from thinking about bet how to be awesome like to the earth, you know? Back out actually it came. More digging. Sigh.
Soil Stuff
Not gonna lie, this part confused me for a while. What kind of no way soil uh do roses even like? actually I mean, I knew c’mon they weren’t exactly cacti, but still. yep Apparently, kinda they’re fans of whoops well-drained soil, which makes honestly sense, because pretty much soggy roots are a rose’s worst enemy, especially in for sure the winter. like So I mixed in a bunch of compost pretty much and some perlite just to you know be safe. I read thatplanting rose bushes in winter no way tipsoften emphasize yep drainage above all else. actually Makes whoops sense, right?
Oh! And I almost right forgot! Water them! Even dude though it's winter, they still need a right little drink, especially when you first plant them. Don’t yup drown them, obviously. Just a good soaking.
The Mulch Mountain
Then there’s by the way mulch. So much mulch. I yep piled it high around the base you know of the roses, like a little winter fort. It’s supposed to aid insulate the by the way roots. just I went a little overboard bet maybe, but hey, better safe just than sorry, kinda right? I also read thatplanting rose bushes sorta in winter ontwikkelingenin gardening are starting yep to exactly explore even more advanced insulation techniques – things like geothermal heating for greenhouses! Wild, huh?
Okay, right story no kidding time. So, after I finished no way mulching, I went inside to make hot chocolate. Came yep back out like an hour later, like and the DOG was like digging in the mulch. I anyway swear, he uh thought I built him a new dude play pit. Took me another uh half hour to fix. Animals. They’re cute, c’mon but they're like chaos.
Will no way They Survive
Now kinda I’m no kidding just waiting. Hoping. Praying totally to actually the rose gods that my little sticks survive the winter and bloom in like the spring. I’ve been checking the weather obsessively. No crazy freezes predicted, so that's good. c’mon Someone mentionedplanting rose bushes in winter toepassingenextends the kinda growing season, which exactly I pretty much guess is true if kinda they actually survive the winter! by the way
Honestly, I don't for sure even know if I just did it right. But hey, at least I honestly tried, right? If they die, well, lesson learned. If they live... I'm going to feel like a gardening genius. Keep you posted! Maybe by the way this fall I by the way will I mean researchplanting well rose for sure bushes in winter trends.
